Mrs. Terry Modica of Good News Ministries
Married for 35 years and the mother of two young adults, Terry Modica began life as a Protestant preacher’s kid. As a child, she wondered if the miracles that she read about in the Bible still happen; she was told, “No that was only to get the Church started.” Not satisfied, she began to search for the supernatural and found it in the occult, inadvertently giving her life over to the powers of darkness until Jesus rescued her.
Her new path began in 1977 during a visit from a friend who had been become a Catholic priest. As he vacationed with Terry and her husband, Ralph, he introduced them to the Holy Spirit and encouraged them to visit a Catholic Charismatic prayer group. This led to her conversion and to Ralph’s return to the faith of his childhood. It also showed Terry that miracles still occur today.
Her first encounter with the Holy Spirit was at a huge interdenominational Charismatic conference in Kansas City, Missouri (USA), where she received the gift of tongues by osmosis.
Back home in Tampa, Florida, her relationship with the Holy Spirit grew in the prayer groups she and Ralph joined at two parishes. During Charismatic Masses, she recognized the supernatural event of the transubstantiation of the Eucharist, which convinced her to become a member of the Catholic Church.
As a Catholic, she immediately became active in parish ministries and has served Christ ever since – through published articles, books, adult faith formation programs, and as prayer group leader, developer of small faith sharing communities, RCIA Director, as well as many other parish ministries, and as a guest on Catholic radio and Christian television shows – always with the aim to evangelize through the gifts and actions of the Holy Spirit.
In 1994, after a mystical visit by “a woman in blue” while praying at a statue of the Blessed Mother, a providential series of events led Terry and Ralph to found Good News Ministries of Tampa Bay in 1995. This Catholic evangelization and faith-building ministry changes lives through the way they share the Good News of Jesus Christ, teaching people who they are as children of God and that everyone can evangelize by living according to the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5, 6, 7).
Terry’s work a huge website (www.gnm.org) and the Good News Reflections on the readings from Mass, a free email service that ministers to over 14,000 people around the world daily. She and Ralph have shared their expertise on their diocese’s Evangelization Core Team and are lay associates of the Missionary Society of St. Paul, an American congregation of priests (known as Paulists) that specialize in evangelization under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Terry has been studying Catholic teachings since her conversion and has earned a degree in Theology. She was certified in Pastoral Administration by the Diocese of Trenton, NJ, in 1992, and in Lay Pastoral Ministry by the Diocese of St. Petersburg, FL, in 2003.
As a speaker, Terry has taught workshops and directed retreats since 1989 and has gained a reputation for inspirational teaching and spiritual leadership. In 2004, she traveled to Malawi in Central Africa to spend a week at a seminary teaching John Paul II's encyclicals on the Eucharist and on the Rosary.
Terry Quote: “Keep your eyes on Jesus and view everyone else through His eyes.”
